Immortal Beloved Review

Immortal Beloved (Immortal Beloved, #1)

Immortal Beloved
Cate Tiernan
January 2011
Hodder & Stoughton

Opening line:~ Last night my whole world came tumbling down.
Now I'm running scared.

Closing line:~ I was done running.

Favourite quote:~ ...'I want my power back. I want my heritage. I want to be my mother's daughter, my father's heir.'
~Nasty~

An interesting story for the dark romance genre, not a vampire, werewolf or angel insight. Instead we have immortals with a flare for magic.

Nastasya has been existing for over 400 years. Leading many different lives, most are spent parting with friends and not having a care in the world. But when one of her closest friends leaves a taxi driver paralysed Nasty is shocked into turning her life around. On the run from her friends she finds herself at River's house, an immortal she met hundreds of years earlier. River's 'safe-house' could be likened to immortality rehab where immortals can spend time learning to use their magic in a good way, and fight the personal battle of good and evil.

And what story would be complete without the guy!? Enter Reyn.
Reyn seems very closed off to Nasty but the two seem to vaguely remember each other from some point throughout their lives. Constantly draw to each other the pair soon remember more about the other but with over 400 years of memories not all memories are good!

I'm really torn with how I feel about this story! It had a great opening chapter and I was totally hook, then after Nasty was on the run I was so intrigued as to what would happen. But then Nasty reaches River's house and things slow way down. I appreciate she is on a road to self-discovery, as are the other immortals at the house, and we need to learn about her past to understand her present, but I wanted so much more. It's not until you get about 190 pages in that things start to really pick up again. Then I was hooked again with magic lessons, the true discovery of Reyn, and Nasty's own heritage being reviled, I couldn't read quick enough!

I really like Nastasya! I like the fact that even after 400 years she can still be shocked by her closest friends. I admire the courage that she has and what it took for her to leave them all behind along with everything else. Her past is so haunting and I look forward to the next book to she how she deals with things now she knows what she knows.
I love Reyn!! I can't say much more about him as I feel it would give too much away! But his own journey is just as compelling as Nasty's.
I am looking forward to the next two books to see how their lives develop and how Nastys friends are going to react to her.

3.5 of 5 Stars. Why? Because I loved the idea of the story, it was just a little too slow at times but I understand why. As I said you need to now about the past before you can understand the present.

Author Interview with Tom Clempson

Tom Clempson is the author of One Seriously Messed-Up Week: In The Otherwise Mundane And Uneventful Life Of Jack Samsonite which is the funniest book I've read this year! If you haven't read my review read it here.

Thank you so much for stopping by the blog today

Thank you for having me!

1. How does it feel to be a published author?

Unreal. Literally. I suppose, because at the time of this interview we’re still about 10 weeks away from publication, it won’t feel real until I am able to see it in shops. But even so, to know that people like you, who read and review books all the time, have read it and haven’t thrown it back in my face, fills me with such a sense of… I don’t even know! But it’s nice! It’s very nice. Everything is still sinking in. I’m still celebrating getting an agent and that happened about 2 years ago now!

2. Please could you sum up O.S.M.W.I.T.O.M.U.L.O.J.S. in one sentence?

Oh no, this is like a pitch! I’m no good at pitching my own stuff. I have a knack of making it sound superbly crap. But I’ll give it a shot…

When a very average teenage boy is faced with the prospect of writing an essay about himself, he decides it’s time to stop being average, (only he may have gone too far!).

How was that? I don’t think I really said anything that isn’t already in the title. The title says it all!

3. In all honesty, how much of the book is based on personal experience?

LOADS of it! I used my own school experiences as a template for Jack’s story. But those experiences are all ones that I think are fairly universal to teenage boys – growing pains (see first line of the book), girl trouble, bully trouble, fitting in… I think that quite a few people can relate to Jack, because we’ve all been in similar circumstances (well, to some degree. Maybe not quite to the same extent as Jack).

4. Who is your favourite character and why?

That crazy kid on the bus. He was just so fun to write. I could happily write a whole book just for him. I used to write emails to my friends in the voice of a slightly deranged person, and that’s where he came from. I daresay I freaked out quite a lot of people!.

5. Did you have a favourite teacher while you were at school?

I had a couple of favourites. My school was very similar to Jacks, so there were a lot of characters. My Yr 9 English teacher was a really inspiring guy. My art teachers were very cool too. None quite match up to the teachers in the book though.

6. Your book has been described as Adrian Mole meets The Inbetweeners, how does that make you feel?

It’s such a compliment to be compared to two creations that are so adored. I have no idea how accurate those comparisons are though, because my only memories of Adrian Mole are from my Mum reading it to me at quite a young age (I sincerely hope the material wasn’t THAT similar to mine! Unless my Mum edited her version?) and I’ve only ever seen about 20 minutes of The Inbetweeners. Yeah, it’s a HUGE compliment, but at the same time makes me realise that my work isn’t quite as original as I’d have hoped.

7. Are you working on anything else at the moment?

I am being very optimistic/presumptuous/foolish and am working on a follow-up to OSMUW. It’s a very different experience to writing the first one, because this time around I am aware that there is the possibility that other people might read it. First time round I was fairly certain no one was going to read it, which gave me a lot of freedom.

8.You may not believe it but...................

Oh, where to begin… Jack isn’t me! Ummm… nobody in the book is based upon any individual from real life (no one ever believes me!). I wrote to two agents, the first turned me down because they ‘don’t accept work by children’. My first draft only took 2 weeks to write. The original title for the book was only 3 words long! I’ll stop there.

Thank you so much for stopping by the blog to answer my questions, I think some of your answers were as funny as the book!

Thank you. It was a pleasure.

Review: One Seriously Messed-up Week:

One Seriously Messed-Up Week: in the Otherwise Mundane and Uneventful Life of Jack Samsonite

In The Otherwise Mundane & Uneventful Life of Sam Taylor Jack Samsonite.
Tom Clempson
June 2011

Opening Line:~ Nob-ache.

Closing Line:~ nob-ache.

Favourite Quote:~ ‘The gruff-nuggets of the world have shat on us for long enough! It’s our turn now! It’s our time to stand up and stand our ground, because we’re not taking anymore s**t. And that cheese-c**k Pimento can go suck his own d**k if he thinks he can take my girl away from me!’
~Jack~

Funniest book I have read this year!! Laughed so much I got some strange looks from friends and family.

Our hero?
Jack Samsonite
His mission?
1) pass his GCSEs
2) get the girl (to notice he exists)
3) survive the week without a serious face punching
Good thing he’s got a plan. Well, half a plan…

I really enjoyed this book!! From start to finish! This book took me out of my comfort zone, I don’t usually like books that are diary based but this book is so much more than that! Sam aka Jack is writing down everything that happens to him within a week for an English assignment. With girls, joints and fights, his ‘uneventful’ life soon becomes anything but.
Jack is doing everything he can to win over the girl of his dreams and when he is finally getting somewhere he soon realises reality is different to dreaming!
Clempson’s writing is funny and very smart indeed. He has the perfect balance of ‘crudeness’ and wit which kept me hooked and laughing for days. Clempson has created a new, clear, strong male voice within the teen fiction genre.

A must for all teen guys and all teen girls so you know what the guys are thinking. How often do we girls get an insight into the mind of boys? If only this book had been around when I was at school!!

4 of 5 Stars. Why? Because this story was something very different for me and I really enjoyed it. I went through a range of emotions and truly felt for Jack at times! A great read!!

Giveaway

My Name is Memory
Hi everyone!!
I somehow managed to get two copies of My Name is Memory by Ann Brashares so Hodder have said I can do a giveaway!!!!! Wooooooo!

You have until Sunday 27th to leave your comment. A winner will be chosen by myself and fellow blogger Nix and will be announced the following Monday. You do not have to follow my blog to enter. This is an international giveaway.

For your chance to win all you have to do is leave a comment below telling me what your favourite memory is.

My Name is Memory
From the New York Times-bestselling author of The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants, inspired, magical book-a love story that lasts more than a lifetime.

Daniel has spent centuries falling in love with the same girl. Life after life, crossing continents and dynasties, he and Sophia (despite her changing name and form) have been drawn together-and he remembers it all. Daniel has "the memory", the ability to recall past lives and recognize souls of those he's previously known. It is a gift and a curse. For all the times that he and Sophia have been drawn together throughout history, they have also been torn painfully, fatally, apart. A love always too short.

Interwoven through Sophia and Daniel's unfolding present day relationship are glimpses of their expansive history together. From 552 Asia Minor to 1918 England and 1972 Virginia, the two souls share a long and sometimes torturous path of seeking each other time and time again. But just when young Sophia (now "Lucy" in the present) finally begins to awaken to the secret of their shared past, to understand the true reason for the strength of their attraction, the mysterious force that has always torn them apart reappears. Ultimately, they must come to understand what stands in the way of their love if they are ever to spend a lifetime together.

A magical, suspenseful, heartbreaking story of true love, My Name is Memory proves the power and endurance of a union that was meant to be.

Author Interview with Amy Plum

Die For Me
Amy Plum
May 2011

I'm so excited to have Amy Plum author of DIE FOR ME at Midnight Reads to answer questions about her debut novel. I loved this story, if you haven't seen my review read it here.

1. The most important question............Vincent or Jules? Please could you explain why?

Oh, Bungle that is a trick question. I obviously love Vincent, but have a real soft spot for Jules...but maybe it’s because he’s the one who doesn’t have the girl, and I feel for him. I could see myself going for both of them in real life. Vincent is the one who would sweep me off my feet, but Jules is the one who would get under my skin and who I would find myself thinking about when I least expect it.

2. Which character are you most like and why?

I am like all of the characters. Kate is a lot like me in her interests, but she is stronger and wiser than I was at her age. I have gone through stages of being like Georgia – have definitely had my party-girl years. And I can come up with some pretty good lines like she does, but never on-the-spot: only on paper or hours after-the-fact. I dealt in art and antiquities like Papy and know a lot about paintings restoration like Mamie. So there’s a little of me in each of the humans.

3. Do your friends and family influence your characters?

Not really. Although I did give Kate the kind of family I wished I had had. My friends are fabulous, but I haven’t copied any of their personalities for the books. I gave a good friend a cameo, however, as a bad guy in Book 2, which he is thrilled about.

4. Art galleries and museums are referred to or used as settings throughout Die For Me. Which is your favourite gallery/museum and who is your favourite artist?

My favorite museums are the small ones set in people’s homes. The Frick in New York. The Isabelle Stewart Gardner in Boston. The Jacquemart-Andre in Paris. I love walking through them and imagining I lived inside that exquisite architecture with those amazing pictures hanging on my walls. It’s unlike any big-museum experience.
I have so many favorite artists, that it’s an impossible question to answer. But I do have a real place in my heart for Modigliani’s reclining nudes. And I love my pre-Renaissance painters like Simoni Martini, the Lorenzetti Brothers, Duccio, Giotto, et al!

5. What can we expect from book 2?

New characters. New Paris locations. Kate finds out more about what the revenants are. Some steamy make-out scenes. And the plot THICKENS...

6.You may not believe it but.......

I don’t have a t.v. connection. We’re a DVD-only family!

Thank you so much Amy for answering my questions, I cannot wait for book 2!! If you would like to learn more about DIE FOR ME or Amy click on the links below:

Author Interview with Josephine Angelini

STARCROSSED
Josephine Angelini
Released: 3rd June 2011

Today I would like to welcome debut author Josephine Angelini to the blog who has been kind enough to answer some questions about her novel, Starcrossed. I loved loved loved this book and if you haven't already read my review read it here.

1) How does it feel to be a published author?

It's amazing!  Sometimes I don't believe that this is really happening, like I'm going to wake up and find that this whole year has just been one very long and convincing daydream.  I read and I write all day long.  I have the best job in the world!

2) Please could you sum up Starcrossed in once sentence?

Starcrossed is a modern day re-imagining of the Iliad, set in high school.

3) You have said Lucas is loosely based on your husband, do friends and family often influence your characters?

Friends, family, people I run into at the grocery store, everyone I've ever met influences my characters, and the people closest to me influence it the most.  Claire is an amalgam of a few childhood friends I had, really wonderful girls that I still adore, and a few of my current girlfriends.  Helens father Jerry is named after my brother Jerry.  While my brother has a very different personality from Helens dad, every time I write the name 'Jerry' I smile and think of my amazing big brother.  I use tricks like this to bond with my characters.  It makes me feel closer to them.

4)  Who is your favourite character from Starcrossed and why?

Helen's my favorite.  She's as tough as they come, but she isn't hardened.  She knows she isn't the smartest, or the bravest, or the most compassionate person in the world, but where she feels she lacks a quality she turns to a friend to help her better herself.  Helen isn't perfect, but she isn't afraid to keep trying.  I admire that.

5) Can you tell us anything about Dreamless, book 2 in the Starcrossed  trilogy?

Dreamless is darker than the first book.  There is a lot more action and danger, and a new character which I hope everyone likes, named Orion.  And it has a kick-ass ending, a real nail-biter.  I'm super proud of how it turned out.

6) Other than your own book, what is your favourite YA book and why?

Anne of Green Gables, no question.  I think I've read all the 'Anne' books about a zillion times, starting from when I was 9 or 10.  I LOVE Anne, and I think I'll always try to put a bit of her spark and spunk in my YA characters.

7) Which book is your all time favourite and why?

Wow, I just don't know.  I've always been an avid reader, and at different times in my life there have been books that I read over and over and couldn't bear to be parted from.  I get attached to books and I won't go anywhere without them.  I admit that it's a little creepy, but what can I do?  I get obsessed with stories.

8) You may not believe it but..........................

I can juggle.  I'm serious! I know how to juggle.  Not very well, but I can keep three balls in the air.  If this writing thing doesn't shake out I guess I could always be a clown.  :)

Thank you so much for stopping by to answer my questions, I can't wait for Dreamless!!
I'm rather impressed that you can juggle and a little jealous!

STARCROSSED Review

STARCROSSED
Josephine Angelini
June 2011

Opening Line: 'But if you bought me a car now, it would be yours when I go away to school in two years. Still practically new.'

Closing Line: Helen, beloved of the goddess of love, went downstairs to crawl into her empty bed as Lucas, the son of the sun, leaned back onto his elbows and watched his father-god brighten the bare wooden planks of her window's walk.

(I have two) Favourite Quote(s): ...'Anyway, geeks are the best. You're all so deliciously corruptible'...
~Claire~

'I only have so much willpower, Helen,' he whispered. 'And since you apparently sleep in the most ridiculously transparent tank top I've ever seen, I'm going to have to ask you to get under the covers before I do something stupid.'
~Lucas~

I LOVED IT, I LOVED IT, I LOVED IT!!!!

An amazing story that will pull you in from the start, send you on a roller-coaster ride and throw you out the other end more that satisfied!!!

Helen Hamilton is the shy girl around town who lives with her father after her mother abandoned them. She spends most of her time just trying to blend into the crowed because if she even thinks she is becoming centre of attention she gets the strangest pains in her stomach.
As she gets ready to start Junior year with best friend Claire, Helen discovers a new family has moved to town and several of the members will also be attending school. The Delos family is the talk of the town, but Helen is already fed up of hearing about them and couldn't really care less, that is until she sets eyes on Lucas Delos. Driven by a power and rage she doesn't understand Helen attacks Lucas with the intent to kill him in the middle of the crowded school corridor. Helen doesn't understand what is happening or why. Every time she sees a member of the Delos family she wants to kill them. And if that wasn't bad enough, each time she sees them a trio of blood crying sisters appear, which Helen later learns are The Furies.
After being saved by the Delos family from being abducted one night, Helen has an encounter with Lucas that will change the fates forever.
Helen discovers that she is a descendant of the Greek Gods and she and the Delos family are part of an ancient blood-feud.

I loved this story! The only other thing I have read that contains Greek mythology is Percy Jackson and I enjoyed that and remember thinking I wish there were more books like it! And now my wishes have come true with STARCROSSED! I can't praise this book enough!!! I will admit, I don't know my Greek mythology as much as I would like but Angelini's take on the subject has me hooked more than ever before!

I really like the development of Helen's character as the story progresses, she goes form shy girl about town, to a kick ass heroine. I like how her relationships with friends old and new grow as she learns to accept herself.  I love Claire, the spunky best friend, who isn't afraid to say what she thinks and has total faith in Helen. The relationship between Helen and Lucas is very believable both 'before and after', you will see what I mean. And the secondary characters feel just as important as the main characters, and are written about with just as much love. Hector, Lucas' cousin really stands out for me, he's a bit of a bad-boy who just wants to protect his family.
Many questions are posed throughout this story and although most are answered several have been left for
DREAMLESS, book 2. Which I need please :) Because I spent the last four or so chapters with my hand to my mouth! I have become obsessed with this story and still find myself wondering what is going to happen to the characters.

Angelini's writing is truly beautiful and compelling.
Another 2011 debut author I'll be keeping both eyes on!!

5 of 5 Stars! Why? Because I was hooked from page 1 to page 514!!! I was constantly thinking about the characters when I wasn't reading and when I did read it was until way past midnight, as Mrs. Angelini knows!!

Darkest Mercy Review

Darkest Mercy
Melissa Marr

Opening Line: Niall walked through the ruins of the tattoo shop.

Closing Line: And the winter Queen and her consort covered their winter garden with a fall of white snow.

Favourite Quote: Send the messengers for the faery courts. This is the end.
~Chela~

I hate to do this, I wanted to love this book because I loved the other four and I constantly recommend them to customers but Darkest Mercy left me wanting more!!!

I have loved the Wicked Lovely Series since the very beginning! Darkest Mercy has been a long time coming for me, and like other readers, I had so many questions I wanted answering.
So, as we know, Keenan is missing and the Dark Court is bleeding, Ash is left to attend to the Summer Court by herself and Donia, well what can you say about Donia, Ice Cold but with a taste for Summer.

I'm finding it very hard to write a review because the things I want to say will just spoil the book for those who have not yet read it, so what I will say is this:

It is always nice to see the growth and development of characters and Marr gives us that: Keenan finally thinks of himself and makes more than one life changing decision that could shock some readers but others will not be and see them before they happen. Ash kicks ass and finally accepts her role as the Summer Queen and becomes everything we knew she could and would be. Donia, I have loved her character from the start and would go to War with her any-day of the week! She is and always has been a natural born leader. Seth has always been a voice of reason for me, and even more so now he is a seer and Niall finally finds some form of peace.

I loved many things about Marr's final instalment but then other things left me wanting!!!! Which is not good for the final book in a series. I was thinking War would bring many battles before then end and we would have a writer with the courage that JK Rowling had with the last Harry Potter book. JK wasn't afraid to kill of main/supporting characters and although Marr does make some sacrifices, I didn't see them as big enough. I was constantly turning the page and thinking this is it, something is coming but in the end it just turned out 'nice'.
(I'm not comparing Darkest Mercy to Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows as I know others have, I'm just saying I wish Marr had the courage to let go a little and give us something more.)

3 of 5 Starts. Why? It pains me to give just 3 stars because I loved the other books so much and all received 4 or 5 stars. Darkest Mercy has been given 3 stars because as I have said I was left wanting more, much more. I honestly think Marr had more to give.

NIGHTSHADE Review

Nightshade (Nightshade, #1)

NIGHTSHADE
Andrea Cremer

Before I begin this review I need to say that I didn’t like this book. This had nothing to do with the writing (which was fabulous) and everything to do with my own sense of what should and should not be put into certain books. In this review I will explain my rating but these things may not bother you. If this is the case then do read this book as it is beautifully structured and written.
Nightshade is the name of one of the guardian packs that the book centre around. Guardians are like werewolves but differ, as they are magical creations, which exist as both forms at all times and can pick which one they are seen as. The other pack is the Bane pack. Calla is the alpha of the Nightshade pack. She is destined to mate with the Bane alpha, Ren. This pairing has been picked by the keepers, the magical beings who run the packs, to merge the separate fractions to create a new, stronger pack. However, a spanner is thrown into the works when Calla saves Shay, a human boy who the keepers seem to have a special interest in. It is forbidden to save the human and Calla risks everything to protect him and then falls completely in love with him. Soon she is questioning all she knows, defying those she is sworn to protect and threatening the safety of both packs. Will she do the right thing by her pack and mate with Ren, the Bane alpha who has sworn not to betray her, or will she abandon all she knows to run off with Shay?
This book showed so much promise. The cover is beautiful, the concept is amazing and the characters are beautifully written. My issues were as follows

1) Adult themes in YA books
There were many plot points I would class as adult themes in this book . The book tried to deal with sex, racism, homosexuality, abuse of power, sexual abuse, murder, and drugs...all in 400 pages! In my opinion there were far too many adult themes being dealt with at any one time for them to be covered well. As an adult I knew the implications and consequences of some of these things but if you bring them into a YA book you have to make sure that you deal with that as well as the subject matter. This book didn’t

2) Sexual Abuse theme
This was dealt with poorly. The keepers of the packs were sexually abusing the minors in their power. The guardians had to do whatever they were told and apparently this extended to sexual favours. We knew that the alphas didn’t like that it was happening, but that was it. At no point did we see the effects of this on the characters that it was happening to. It felt like the only reason this plot point was included was to prove that the keepers were bad. There are other ways to do this and I thought that to use this subject matter this way was completely inappropriate

3) The spineless creature that was the lead character
Calla was told what to do throughout the book. We were supposed to believe that she is an alpha yet she rolled over like a puppy for everyone in the book, even Shay at points! The love triangle she is at the centre of only serves to reinforce this, as she knows what she wants but she continually allows the two males to overturn her decisions and do whatever the hell they like. The fact that it is completely reinforced that she hasn’t even kissed a boy, due to tradition, whereas Ren has ignored the impending union to sleep with anything in a skirt shows that she is the kind of weak character I avoid in books. I didn’t like her and this does not bode well for any book!

STARCROSSED - UK Proof

So as you know I was fortunate enough to get a proof copy of STARCROSSED by Josephine Angelini, and I like the cover that much I thought I would post pictures. Sorry, I know they are a little dark but I think you can still see how pretty it looks!
The bottom image is of a pocket mirror that came with the book. For some reason I can't change the the view of the image, sorry!!
