It may be hard to believe but it does happen every now & again, Sally has no books to share this week. It's not really her fault though, the postman didn't deliver her books in time!!! But Bungle does have some things to show you :)

Bungle's shelves
My first book this week was a gift from my boyfriend because I've been so ill :( That book was Fire Spell by Laura Amy Schlitz which I just love the sound of, I love the cover too! If you know me in any way shape or form you will know I love The Hobbit so as it's hard to read at the moment I treated myself to the audio edition which I'm really enjoying! I had to pop to work with yet another sick note (which I hate more than anything! Everyone knows I'm a workaholic!!)  While there I noticed Ferryman by Claire McFall, I'm not going to lie, I loved the cover which is why I bought it :) I also picked up Valiant by Holly Black as I have book 1& 3 already.

I received another lovely 'sorry your ill' present from my boyfriend which I just loved! It was the best surprise this week! It was the beautiful new Pandora Fairy Tale book charm. It's one of the best books I've ever gotten :)

Off to see what you all got now. We hope you have a lovely Easter!!

It's been a fairly quiet seven days for the Midnight Reads posse.  Bungle is hiding somewhere under a duvet and I have been on leave from work which means I've spent the last seven days reading, writing and eating chocolate.  I'm so lucky! Anyhoo, in the midst of our rather sedentary life choices we did manage to find a few books that might whet your interest!  So let's crack on shall we....?

Bungles Shelves

Still not well but I'm off to the hospital on Monday so hopefully get some answers! I've been really good as I can't get out & about. My book this week was a proof of Acid by Emma Pass, well I actually got it 2 weeks ago but my aunty took it home with her by mistake so the image here of the proofs is taken for Emma's blog. I've also included the actual cover for you :) After seeing Sal's books last week I also download the free ebook of Challenging Zed by Joss Stirling. I love this series & this was a nice little sort story, it was just too short!

What is there to say?  The week was finally upon us when Clockwork Princess by Cassandra Clare, my most anticipated book for 2013 made it's way into the world. So I sat at my table, laptop in front of me along with all my fave TMI/TID tweeps and we waited  for it to arrive and commiserated with each other when it was late and then when it did arrive we read and we discussed spoilery things in DMs and then we mourned the end of the series together.  I'll be writing a review later but trying to ensure that it is spoiler free is going to be difficult so it may take a while!   The other book that I got this week really brightened my morning when Clockwork Princess failed to arrive on the day scheduled.  I was lucky enough to get a preview copy of Icons by Margaret Stohl from netgalley. I loved the Beautiful Creatures series so I'm really excited to see how Margaret gets on with her new series!

So, as the great Bugs Bunny once said, that's all folks! What a week eh? Marvellous! So, what did you get?

Review ~ The Eternity Cure ~ Julie Kagawa

Title: The Eternity Cure

Author: Julie Kagawa

Published: 3rd May 2013

By: Harlequin Teen

Source: netgalley

First line:  I smelled blood as soon as I walked  into the room.

Last line:  Sorry – potential spoiler!!

Fave line: “Only death will take me away from you vampire girl” he whispered.

Eyes down then for a review of yet another of my most anticipated reads for 2013! The Eternity Cure is book two of the Blood of Eden series by Julie Kagawa, a vampire series which brings with it a unique dystopian element that makes this series stand out from so many others that reside in this genre.

When we left Allison at the end of the Immortal Rules she, together with Zeke had found Eden and leaving him and his family there in safety had left to find Kanin, the vampire that had Turned her and who was now in danger himself. A hostage of Sarren’s, Allison sees him calling out to her in her dreams as he is tortured by his captor and she uses the blood ties that bond them together to track him.

The plot in The Eternity Cure is seamless and the detailing of the journey that Allison goes on is not an easy one. She is unwittingly dragged off course by Jackal, her blood brother, who for reasons of his own joins her to find Kanin and in the course of their search they discover that the red lung virus has mutated and things are looking pretty bad for humans and vampires. Their mission in the end is to find a cure for the disease which threatens to kill those that Allison cares for most.

Where to start? Allison is the perfect female protagonist.  Yes, she is totally kickass and yes she can kick the crap out of anyone or anything that gets in her way but there is so much more to her.  Even when she’s fighting for what is right she’s fighting against her own inner demons and she’s still determined to stick to her own beliefs irrelevant of those around her and I love her for that!

As for the rest of the characters? There are tonnes of familiar names here but boy have they changed!  As the story has evolved so have the needs of some of the major players and the switches in their personalities and their behaviour really flip things on their heads.  Jackal who I thoroughly detested in the last instalment became one of my favourite characters and his sarcasm injects a lot of humour into this read.   I have to say there was more than one occasion where his one-liners reminded me of Puck in the Iron Fey series and for me that can only be a good thing! Sarren is a fantastically evil individual, not just because of his behaviour within this story but because of his intentions for the future.  His world view is totally warped and I think it’s those beliefs that make him as unnerving as he is.  In short the guy is a fruitloop! There are other characters who I won’t name here as I don’t want to be spoilery but let’s just say there are some individuals who have changed beyond all recognition and really need a serious thrashing!  As for the lovely Zeke, he brings a few surprises of his own to this tale and I’m so pleased that he was back as I love the role that he plays and the impact that he has on Allison’s character. He returns a stronger character with an even greater resolve to revenge the death of those he loved as well as to be with Allison and I totally love him!

There is a tonne of action in this book and I was thoroughly addicted from the minute I started reading.  There were also a couple of occasions when I actually thought I might need CPR. Oh and a word to the wise Ms Kagawa – the first line of chapter 19? Yeah, please don’t do that to me again.  That was just plain cruel!  The ending left me speechless to say the least and the potential repercussions in book three are huge! The most frustrating thing about this whole scenario is that I now have to wait for what seems like forever to get my hands on the final instalment.  One thing is for certain and that is it’s already on my most anticipated for 2014.

5/5 Seriously, do I actually have to wait a whole year for the final instalment?! I loved, loved, loved this book, but then was I ever going to be of the opinion that Kagawa could actually do any wrong? Um, that would be a no.

Our Bungle is a wee bit broken at the moment so she's not pounding the books in her usual furious fashion. I'm sure she'll be back on her feet in no time and I've no doubt she's got a pile of books to catch up on some of which are included here today! In the meantime, get well soon B!

Bungle's Shelves

As most of you know I've not been well the last 5 weeks so I'm falling behind on everything!! There was no STS last week so I'll start with the 2 books I got then. Tom Clempson sent me One Seriously Messed-UpWeek-end which he has written & drawn all over, I love that author!!!! It made my week last week & each time I read I discover a new drawing & writing! Last week I bought Fallen Too Far by Abbie Glines as an ebook for just 99p!! A bargain for a rather brilliant author.

I had to go to work to hand in my sick note on Monday, which I hated!!!! But there were a few books waiting for me. The first was from Bloomsbury which was Hidden by Marianne Curley, I'd have bought this had I not been sent it by the publishers, I love the look & sound of it! I also received Out of the Easy by Ruta Sepetys from Penguin, again, I love the look & sound of this one! I did buy one book which isn't breaking the rules as its book 2, haha!! That book was was The Evolution of Mara Dyer by Michelle Hodkin.

As I'm unable to read properly I bought my first audio book, The Book Thief by Markus Zusak read by Allan Corduner. I am loving it!!! I'll be buying more audio books because of this one!

And my last book was a new Bible, because on all honesty I just needed a new one :)

Sally's Shelves

I got me a fine little mix of books this week, some of which I paid for and some I got for free! This week I got my hands on Asunder by Jodi Meadows #2 of the Incarnate series which I've been meaning to buy since it came out in January. Here's the blurb which I love!:

DARKSOULS
Ana has always been the only one. Asunder. Apart. But after Templedark, when many residents of Heart were lost forever, some hold Ana responsible for the darksouls–and the newsouls who may be born in their place.
SHADOWS
Many are afraid of Ana’s presence, a constant reminder of unstoppable changes and the unknown. When sylph begin behaving differently toward her and people turn violent, Ana must learn to stand up not only for herself but for those who cannot stand up for themselves.
LOVE
Ana was told that nosouls can’t love. But newsouls? More than anything, she wants to live and love as an equal among the citizens of Heart, but even when Sam professes his deepest feelings, it seems impossible to overcome a lifetime of rejection.

In this second book in the Newsoul trilogy, Ana discovers the truth about reincarnation and will have to find a way to embrace love and make her young life meaningful. Once again, Jodi Meadows explores the extraordinary beauty and shadowed depths of the soul in a story equal parts epic romance and captivating fantasy.

I also got Article 5 by Kristen Simmons which is another purchase I've been meaning to make for a long time! I love me a dystopian read and this looks fab.  Here's the blurb:

New York, Los Angeles, and Washington, D.C., have been abandoned.

The Bill of Rights has been revoked, and replaced with the Moral Statutes.

There are no more police—instead, there are soldiers. There are no more fines for bad behavior—instead, there are arrests, trials, and maybe worse. People who get arrested usually don't come back.

Seventeen-year-old Ember Miller is old enough to remember that things weren't always this way. Living with her rebellious single mother, it's hard for her to forget that people weren't always arrested for reading the wrong books or staying out after dark. It's hard to forget that life in the United States used to be different.

Ember has perfected the art of keeping a low profile. She knows how to get the things she needs, like food stamps and hand-me-down clothes, and how to pass the random home inspections by the military. Her life is as close to peaceful as circumstances allow.

That is, until her mother is arrested for noncompliance with Article 5 of the Moral Statutes. And one of the arresting officers is none other than Chase Jennings—the only boy Ember has ever loved.

As for freebies, I got Challenging Zed, by Joss Stirling which was released as an e-novella for Valentines day, so if you want Zed's back story and you want to find out what Zed was like when he was nine and when he first met Sky  this is the one for you!

I also got Bridger by Megan Curd, another book I've been meaning to get for ages. In case you haven't heard about Bridger, here's the blurb!:

Ashlyn McVean doesn't believe in fairy tales. That is, until Ashlyn is thrown into the crosshairs of grudges her grandmother created long ago. After finding out she is one of two people able to cross between faerie realms, Ashlyn is faced with trying to understand her abilities, along with navigating a new relationship with her boyfriend, Liam. As if being on a centuries old hit list and dealing with crazed pixies isn't enough, her new abilities mean trouble for Liam. Knowing her new life puts everyone she loves in danger, Ashlyn must decide what's most important in her life between friends, family, love, and ultimately, realms.

Finally I got Enigma by Aimee Ash! I've been looking at this for a long time and it's had some really good reviews so finally I got myself a copy!  Here's the blurb for Enigma in case you've not heard about it:

When KATE HARRIS moves to Long Beach California, she hopes to finally settle in her new home. She longs to have friends and fantasises about meeting the guy of her dreams. But after one dangerous night, Kate finds herself obsessing over a mysterious stranger who saves her life, and she embarks on a quest to uncover his identity. But her journey ends when she discovers her gorgeous neighbour, JACK JONES, who proves to be the welcoming distraction she needs.

Kate is deeply intrigued by Jack, and begins to feel differently when she’s in his company. She is flattered by the attention he showers her with and enjoys her newfound confidence. And even though their relationship symbolises young love, Kate soon realizes that Jack is anything but normal.

When Jack is forced to reveal his many secrets, including the curse inflicted upon him by his twin brother, Sebastian, Kate begins questioning what is real and what is just a mere illusion.

Jack refuses to make peace with his brother, and warns Kate to stay away from him. But Kate is drawn to Sebastian, and if she betrays Jack, the consequences of her actions will lead to devastation for them all.

Sounds good no? So that's it from us this week! Hope there's something there to whet your appetite!  In the meantime, what did you get this week?

Review ~ Tide ~ Daniela Sacerdoti

Title: Tide

Author: Daniela Sacerdoti

Published:  21st February 2013

By: B&W Publishing

First line: It was the first time that Sarah ever felt close to Morag Midnight and the last time that she ever saw her alive.

Last line:  “I love you too.”

Fave line: “The King of Shadows is coming.”

And so Daniela Sacerdoti returns with Tide, book two in the Sarah Midnight trilogy.  For the uninitiated, Sarah Midnight trilogy tells the story of well, Sarah Midnight!  Sarah is a member of a secret family, one of many responsible for ridding the world of demons. Each family has its own skill and Sarah has the blackwater a force that flows through her hands enabling her to kill what she encounters.  She is also a dreamer, someone who has visions of the demons that threaten the secret families and is able to guide the secret families and their aides, the gamekeepers in the battle to destroy them.  Still reeling from the death of her parents Sarah met Harry, her cousin or so she thought.   Even as she formed a relationship with him she was plagued by dreams about another guy. Leaf as she called him turned out to be real, called Nicholas and a member of another secret family. Meeting Nicholas exposed her to the truth about Harry. Actually called Sean he was a gamekeeper and friend of Harry’s or at least he had been until Harry had died and even though he had trained and protected her and helped her in her battle against the Sabha, the council that has turned on them, his deception had been too great and Harry was cast out, leaving Nicholas to take his place.

And this is where Tide picks up. Sean is still frozen out but even then he still watches Sarah from the sidelines, making sure that she is safe.  Nicholas in the meantime is settling into life as Sarah’s boyfriend very easily and far too readily and it’s apparent quite quickly that he has a hold on her that goes beyond simple boyfriend infatuation. Nicholas may be able to take away the pain, but it goes further and Sarah no longer dreams and seems as though she is starting to lose control of her own life. For her part Sarah still misses Sean as much as she tries not to and whilst she knows now what she is and how strong she has the potential to be there are so many more questions unanswered.

The need to answer those questions takes her to Midnight Hall, her ancestral home on the Isle of Islay and she doesn’t go alone. Nope, she ends up going there with Nicholas and Sean as well as many of the major players that we met in Dreams.   I was really pleased to see the return of Mike and Niall and it was great to get to know Elodie (Harry’s widow) more as well as she takes more of a central role.  For a while I thought she was really going to throw a spanner in the works for Sarah! While she’s at Midnight Hall Sarah gains possession of a series of letters written by Morag Midnight that reveal more about Sarah’s family as well as some surprising insights about Sean and all the time the inhabitants of the small isle find themselves under attack from various demons and something appears to be happening to Nicholas…

I liked the way that this story progressed.  The slow change in Nicholas was really good and I felt more than a tad sorry for him as the story progressed.  I also liked Winter as well as the roles that Elodie and Niall took on this time.  As for Sarah, she became stronger over the course of the book and by the end it was good to see how much stronger she had become.  There is a really good final battle in Tide which sets everything up really well for book three.  There are some losses in this book and allegiances do switch which result in big repercussions but whilst the major players were understandably suspicious it was good to see everyone working as a team when it could have quite easily all fallen apart.

It looks like there’s one hell of a battle coming in book three and I can’t wait to see what happens! As for Sarah and Sean, who knows what’s coming next?!

4/5. Really enjoyed this.  I can’t wait for the final instalment!

Review - The Stone Demon ~ Karen Mahoney

Title: The Stone Demon

Author: Karen Mahoney

Published: 8th April 2013

By: Flux publishing

Source: netgalley

First line: They say the truth sets you free.

Last line: “I believe in that”

Synopsis: After being tricked into opening the doorway to the Demon Realm by Aliette, the Wood Queen, Donna Underwood is faced with a terrible ultimatum from the newly released demon hordes. They demand that the alchemists deliver the Philosopher's Stone, or their reaper storm will plunge the world into a devastating modern-day Dark Age.

Donna is sent to London, England, where she must complete her alchemist's training and learn how to recreate the Stone. But time is running out. Between facing the vengeful demon king, Demian, and collecting the Stone's elements, Donna realizes she must give her own life in order to succeed. And this time, even braving death may not be enough to save the world.

And so another series comes to an end! I’ve seen a few series recently which turn into more of an epic journey in the final instalment and this is no exception. Donna has really found her feet in this finale and has become the sort of female protagonist I like to see in YA books. She knows she’s really screwed up and she knows that she has to be the one to put it right. She’s figured out who she is, she knows what and who she wants to fight for and she isn’t afraid to go for it, even when there are obstacles thrown in her way.

Donna’s journey to obtain all the ‘ingredients’ required to make the philosophers stone is not an easy one, but it’s one that she throws herself into. Of course she has her friends by her side. Xan is as smouldery and lovely as ever but it’s Navin who really comes into his own throughout the course of this book and his loyalty to Donna and his willingness to put himself on the line for her is so sweet!

There are tonnes of fantastic characters in this final read. It was fab getting to know Xan’s father, and Aliette and Newton were expanded upon providing further depth to the overall plot.

Did I get everything I wanted out of the last in the series? As ever I refuse to tell you! There are certainly some twists that I didn’t see coming but hey, I guess that’s life! Karen Mahoney has managed to tie everything up quite nicely here and I have to say I’m a little sad to being saying goodbye to Xan. Who knows? Maybe he’ll pop up somewhere some time in the future. If he did I wouldn’t complain! There’s also a fantastic short story about The Maker at the end. Make sure you don’t miss it!

3.5/5 A fantastic end to a really enjoyable series! Am really looking forward to whatever Karen writes next!

Review ~ Fragments ~ Dan Wells

Title: Fragments

Author: Dan Wells

Published: 29th March 2013

By: HarperCollinsUK

Source: netgalley

First line: “Raise a glass” said Hector “to the best officer in new America.”

Last line:  Ariel watched the child and trembled.

Fave line: “I’m the last human being on the planet.”

I’m a huge fan of dystopian series and fell in love with Partials because it had a depth to it that few YA dystopian novels do.  Dan Wells write books that you have to read at a certain pace.  You can’t rush through the text as you can with so many series because there’s so much information in each line you know that if you rush it you’re gonna lose the plot (quite literally!).

The same is certainly true for Fragments. When we left Kira at the end of Partials she was going in search of the trust on the recommendation of Nandita.  She’s also struggling of who she is, something she hasn’t been able to ascertain so far and she’s looking for answers.  She wants to find out what role the Trust, Paragen and the Partials have to play in the cure to the disease that plagues humans and she has to go on one hell of a journey to do it.  We also have the viewpoint of Marcus in this book.  Marcus was I thought a bit of a wallflower in Partials but I think he really comes into his own in the sequel. When Dr Morgan’s Partials raid East Meadow Marcus becomes a part of the newly formed unit that through various spoilery methods works to protect East Meadow and the humans that reside there.

At 562 pages this is one hell of a read! There are a range of themes in here that make you pause for thought.  As is the case with many of the political organisations that emerge in dystopian series there are unexpected twists and turns and not everyone is as legitimate as they seem.  Those that claim to be acting for the greater good are often using hideous practices to achieve their goals and through the course of the book the splits between the factions create greater in-fighting and unexpected coalitions.  Experimentation on living subjects and slavery are also topics that rear their ugly head in this instalment. Add to that the biological disasters that threaten the remaining inhabitants of the planet and you’ve got a pretty intense read to get your head around.
The only downside here for me was that the book felt slightly too long in places.  I felt there were certain stages of the story that perhaps didn’t need to be as protracted as they were.  In particular the journey that Kira, Sam, Afa and Heron make across the country seemed to go on for too long and I did knock half a mark off for that reason alone.

The personalities of the main protagonists seem to have evolved from the first instalment. As I stated earlier Marcus really seems to come into his own.  Kira at times seems to be so determined it seems as though she loses sight of the bigger picture whilst trying to fulfil her own needs and Samm seemed to be a weaker character in this book as he spent his time following Kira around like a lap dog. Heron is the real force of nature in Fragments, especially as continues to fight her own corner and thinks nothing of questioning Kira at every opportunity. That said this sequel also has it’s light hearted moments.  I loved Afa, the reclusive eccentric who genuinely believes himself to be the last human on the planet and whilst there is very little in the way of romance in this book there are a few touching moments between Kira and Samm which have to lead somewhere in book three. We see the return of all the familiar characters from Partials, true identities are revealed and the ending? Well, it certainly sets the scene for an explosive finale!

3.5/5      I can’t imagine the last book in this series being anything other than amazing.  Can’t wait to get my hands on it!

Review ~ The Goddess Inheritance ~ Aimee Carter

 Title: The Goddess Inheritance

Author: Aimee Carter

Published: February 26th 2013

By: Harlequin Teen

Source: netgalley

First line: Throughout his eternal officer Walter had witnessed countless summers, but never one as endless as this.

Last line: Always

Fave line: It seems the games are about to begin.

And yet another series comes to an end! Those of who that have read the first two books in this series will recall that at the end of Goddess Interrupted Kate was kidnapped having just found out that she was pregnant.  This is the point at which we begin The Goddess Inheritance. Nine months down the line Kate is still being held captive by Cronus and Calliope and everything is about to kick off. Cronus wants Kate to rule by his side and is prepared to blackmail her to make that happen whilst Calliope intends to keep baby for herself just to make Kate suffer.   As if that isn’t bad enough Henry ends up in some kind of coma as a result of coming to her rescue, Cronus declares war on the world and Kate has to somehow rescue her kidnapped child, bring her love back from the semi-dead and save the world! Phew!

There had come a point in Goddess Interrupted where Kate had really come into her own.  She had started believing in her own abilities and had begun taking up the role she was destined for with a pretty steely determination.  Unfortunately in this book she seemed to have regressed and had turned into a bit of a Mary-Sue.  Events just seemed to unfold around her, dragging her whinging body along with them.  This did improve by the end when she really seemed to find her strength again but by then it also seemed too late and I’d stopped rooting for her.

Carter has tried to fit in as much interaction with Henry here as is possible given his situation but it did feel that there was still something lacking.  Probably just my romantic old heart crying out for more.  When Henry was there the role he took on was quite heart-warming at times and any doubts I had about his feelings for Kate were gotten rid off.  It’s a shame we didn’t get more of him.   That said, there were a range of secondary characters that were strong and really held my interest, James, Calliope and Cronus to mention a few.  I think these characters more than anything really moved the plot forward and kept me reading.  One thing I did think was strange was that after the hype of the pregnancy and given the importance of it in the plot, there was very little about the birth. For me this would have been quite a climactic point but it seemed to be glossed over and deemed inconsequential.

There are a few curveballs thrown at you in this finale and there are quite a few plotlines that are left wide open giving you the impression that this is not an ending in the true sense but is instead a prelude to another series. That does hamper the way the series closes in some ways although it does provide hope for readers that love this series!  I hope if more books are written James might have more of a starring role as his character was certainly one of the strongest in the series.

3/5  Having read stories about so many strong female protagonists I kind of felt that Kate kind of lost her way a bit in this one. That said, it was nice to see this trilogy reach a conclusion that I approved of!  If you enjoyed the rest of the series, you will enjoy this one!

We love sharing our books with you each week but more importantly we loving see what you add to your shelves. All links added here will take you to goodreads.

Bungle's shelves

As some of you may know I have been a little ill of late, so ill I couldn't that I had been sent two books last week! I will, of course, add them this week so I have lots to share with you all. Sorry for the bad image though!! So last week I got The 5th Wave by Rick Yancey and Young Knights of the Round Table By Julie Golding. I was given a copy of The Gathering of the Lost by Helen Lowe from my favourite rep at the bookshop which is book 2 of The Wall of Night series so I had to get book 1 which is The Heir of Night. This week I was sent two books through the post which were Tide by Daniela Sacerdoti and A Face Like Glass by Frances Hardinge. I love all of my new books and I can't wait to get back reading.

Sally's shelves

Big news from me this week guys as I, yes, I Sally Smurf, did not buy any books! I Know! You're as shocked as I am but it's true! I'm saving up my pennies for the next couple of weeks as we have a few big titles coming out soon so watch this space for those... I did still get three books though! The first I acquired was through the library at work. It's nearly always Mills and Books in there (although there was the one time when I managed to get hold of the first twelve books of the Morganville Vampire series) but on Monday I found a copy of Haunted by Kelley Armstrong - result! Haunter is #5 of the Women of the Otherworld series which I guess means I need to get the first four...hey ho!! I also got a copy of Tide, #2 of the Sarah Midnight trilogy by Daniela Sacerdoti. Am looking forward to seeing what the lovely Sean has been up to. (you can see an image of this with Bungle's books and for some reason goodreads still has no info for it!).  The last book that I got my hands on this week is the second instalment of the Tankborn trilogy by Karen Sandler. Awakening is a book I've been hanging out for since I finished Tankborn so I can't wait to start reading it!

Haunted (Women of the Otherworld, #5)  Awakening (Tankborn, #2)

So that's what we got this week, off to look at what everyone else got then we'll be starting new books with a cup of tea!
