Review ~ Rogue (Talon #2) ~ Julie Kagawa

Title: Rogue

Author: Julie Kagawa

Published: April 28th

By: Harlequin Teen

First line: I stood before a silent, watchful table, six pairs of eyes on me, keen gazes ranging from suspicious to appraising as we waited for the charges to be declared.

Last line:  “Welcome to the future”

Synopsis: Ember Hill left the dragon organization Talon to take her chances with rebel dragon Cobalt and his crew of rogues. But Ember can't forget the sacrifice made for her by the human boy who could have killed her—Garret Xavier Sebastian, a soldier of the dragonslaying Order of St. George, the boy who saved her from a Talon assassin, knowing that by doing so, he'd signed his own death warrant.

Determined to save Garret from execution, Ember must convince Cobalt to help her break into the Order's headquarters. With assassins after them and Ember's own brother helping Talon with the hunt, the rogues find an unexpected ally in Garret and a new perspective on the underground battle between Talon and St. George.

A reckoning is brewing and the secrets hidden by both sides are shocking and deadly. Soon Ember must decide: Should she retreat to fight another day…or start an all-out war?

I actually read Talon (#1 in the Talon series) and Rogue in one go which anyone who gets addicted to a series knows is a dream scenario as you get to avoid the agony of the year long wait between instalments.  In this case that was certainly a bonus as I think I might have gone crazy if I’d had to wait for the usual period of time!

I liked this sequel immensely.  As the plot progresses we find Ember, Garett and Riley all trying to find their own path away from the confines of whichever organisation they were previously aligned to and it’s a process which is, predictably, not as easy as it sounds.  Garett is now a traitor and an enemy of Talon whilst Riley and Ember are now deserters and therefore the enemy of Talon as well as being potential fodder for St George.  Escaping from both therefore should be easy but when is life ever that simple.  Ember is still clinging to the hope that her twin Dante will leave Talon and join her, refusing to see his blind devotion to the corrupt society and Riley is still entwined with the same group as he tries to help those who see Talon for what it is and want to escape.  Garett is to all intents and purposes a wandering soul looking for somewhere to lay his hat.

There are some points in the plot which are sort of predictable, but every word written still had me glued to the page nonetheless, as much as I was screaming at the characters at times! I do like multi POV here.  It highlights the conflict between the three major players. There’s Ember who struggles with her two personas – Dragon vs Human and the way that each of these identities differs in their feelings towards Garett and Riley.  There’s Garett who is struggling with his past as a dragon killer and his feeling towards Ember, a creature who he should hate and then there’s Riley. Rogue finds our rebel leader struggling with his role in aiding Ember to ‘rescue’ her brother which is to all intents a suicide mission.  At the same time he finds it hard containing his dislike of Garett, his natural enemy and his rival for Embers affection, a situation which he feels defies nature.  The additional storyline which detailed his background was enjoyable too as you are left with a clear picture of how he became rogue and you can certainly understand his reasons!

That said, the dynamic between them when they’re really up against it is strong and it’s clear that above all else they all want to do what is right.  I do see the potential for an almost ‘Puck and Ash’ type relationship developing between Garett and Riley. I’d like that very much! And given the way that Rogue ended there’s the potential for a rather explosive next instalment.  There are loads of unanswered questions.  For example, will Garett find some kind of peace of mind? What is so important about Ember that they don’t just destroy her like they have the other rogues?  Who is destroying the safe houses and where are they getting the information from? And ultimately will they be able to put a stop to the destruction that threatens wyrmekind and will they get St George to realise that their bloodlust is all kinds of wrong? I can’t wait to get my hands on it!

4/5 Really enjoyed it!  If you haven’t started this series yet I’d recommend it.

A Personal Review ~ Amy & Matthew ~ Cammie McGovern

Amy & Matthew

Amy & Matthew
Cammie McGovern
March 2014
Macmillan

goodreads says:

Amy loves Matthew and he loves her back. This is their story.

Amy is unflinchingly honest about her limitations. Born with cerebral palsy, she can’t walk or talk without help. But trapped inside this uncooperative body lies a brilliant mind and a luminous spirit – a girl capable of truly loving and worthy of being loved in return.

Matthew has his own set of challenges – a mind consumed by unwanted repeated thoughts, obsessive rituals and a crippling fear that he can't explain. But underneath all of the anxiety lies a deep seed of hope for someone to come along who believes in him…

This is the story of Amy and Matthew. It may not be a fairy tale romance or set in an imagined world far from our own. But the love they share is real. And yes, there's magic in it.

My thoughts:

I'm struggling a little with this one! I've heard so many things about this story but still was unsure what to expect. If you follow this blog and my reading habits you would have noticed I like my books to have an element of fantasy I guess, I like to be taken out of the 'real world' as I have so much to deal with everyday life. That said, I love the books by Laura Jarratt. 90% of my reading is fantasy, sci-fi, books with magical elements and so on. But I am definitly trying to change this.

A few of you know my mum suffers with agoraphobia and my poppy (dad) is an amputee. I help them in every way I can  and yeah, sometimes it's hard, there are bad days and there are good days but I love them and would do just about anything for them. I read like most people do, to escape, I like to visit made up worlds, I like stories that I can pick up and put down, stories that are easy to read but then others that will make you think and really grip you.

For the mental and physical disabilities I deal with daily within my family cerebral palsy is not one of them and it's not something I couldn't imagine having to deal with. This makes it hard for me to understand Amy as a character/person, does her disability effect the way she acts towards others? She is horrible to Matthew, cheats on him, pushes him away, insults him but still expects him to be there for her, I'm pretty sure that's just her though! But Matthew I loved, it was lovely to see him grow and deal with his OCD throughout the story. He is the kind of friend anyone would want.

What I admire about this book is that our main characters are not willing to just sit back and let their disabilities rule their lives. They get out into the world and they get things done for themselves. And although at times I questioned if they really do help each other without one another I just wonder if they would have grown as much. Because when I think back how their unexpected friendship developed throughout the first half of the book it was beautiful and I think on many levels this would have been enough.

Another thing to love about this book is just how diverse it is and it's what we need in the world of books! I'm truly grateful for the authors out there who are willing to push my boundaries. So I may not connect with every character, and I may not love every book written but every story is worth telling! We Need Diverse Books because all our voices are different!

Review ~ The Nowhere Emporium ~ Ross MacKenzie

The Nowhere Emporium (Kelpies)

The Nowhere Emporium
Ross MacKenzie
Kelpies
March 2015
Rating 5*

goodreads says:

When the mysterious Nowhere Emporium arrives in Glasgow, orphan Daniel Holmes stumbles upon it quite by accident. Before long, the 'shop from nowhere' -- and its owner, Mr Silver -- draw Daniel into a breathtaking world of magic and enchantment. Recruited as Mr Silver's apprentice, Daniel learns the secrets of the Emporium's vast labyrinth of passageways and rooms -- rooms that contain wonders beyond anything Daniel has ever imagined. But when Mr Silver disappears, and a shadow from the past threatens everything, the Emporium and all its wonders begin to crumble. Can Daniel save his home, and his new friends, before the Nowhere Emporium is destroyed forever?

My thoughts:

Oh. My. Word. I just love this book, the story, the characters, the settings, the everything! My original statement: I don't think I've been this excited about a book since Harry Potter!! And I am sticking to it. If people know just one thing about me it's that I'm a big big Harry Potter fan so that is some statement coming from me!

I fell in love with this book as soon as I saw it, what a cover! And the inside is just as beautiful. I don't think anything I write here will do this book justice so I will start by saying you need this book in your life, it has to be read! MacKenzie takes us on a magical, mystical, imaginative journey that I just didn't want to end. It's funny because as I was reading I could imagine the authors mind working the same way as Daniel's does as he creates his wonders.

Daniel is our leading boy, a boy who you almost feel is searching for something from the start of the story. He stumbles upon The Nowhere Emporium rather by accident after trying to outrun the bullies. Before he knows it Daniels lonely life has changed into a life of wonders, mystery and well, a lot of hard work. After being taken under the wing of Mr. Sliver, the emporium owner, Daniel is thought how to put his imagination to good use. But he has to use more than that if he is to find Mr. Silver after his disappearance once an old face threatens to destroy everything.

Mackenzie sure knows how to take his readers on a journey! I was captured from the first page and I still don't think I was let go at the last. I love books and I have so many different feelings and thoughts as I read, I know we all do, but there was just something about this book, a feeling, that feeling I got when I first read Harry Potter. I'm not saying this is the next Harry Potter, books should not be compared with each other in that way, they should stand alone and we all need to consider them in their own merit. What I am saying is this is a book that knows how to make you feel, think, to care &  to want more. It is a story that stays with you once you put it down, makes you worry about the characters when you are not reading, and makes you imagine how they lived their lives after that last sentence. And that is when you know you have something special!

I'm not sure I'm doing this book justice, sometimes I struggle to get the right words but please just read this book. So far everyone I've passed my copy to has loved it!

I had to share this picture of the inside cover of the book.
It truly is a magical book!
